A Message from the Department of Defense (DoD) Standardization Executive

WelbyAs the DoD Standardization Executive, I would like to invite you to participate in the DMSMS & Standardization 2010 Conference. The theme of this year's conference – "Bridging Acquisition and Logistics," will focus on the shift of these programs to earlier in the acquisition framework and how these changes will affect the DMSMS and standardization communities.

This change reflects a broader DoD focus on pre-Milestone B systems engineering disciplines, as seen in DoDI 5000.02, Operation of the Defense Acquisition System, and the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act of 2009, Public Law 111-23. The current attention to proper systems engineering practices early in and consistently through the acquisition framework will result in better preparation and accountability during sustainment phases. Both the Defense Standardization and DMSMS Programs are committed to supporting the full spectrum of defense systems, from acquisition to logistics.

The target audiences for this four-day conference are DMSMS and standardization professionals who wish to hone their skills and be a part of shaping the future of DoD acquisition and sustainment policies. The conference includes speakers from DoD and industry senior leadership, and is organized with general sessions, technical sessions, and tutorials. General Sessions will provide top-level strategic objectives and a view into the organizational structure and direction. Technical sessions will cover DMSMS and standardization policies, procedures, guidance and automated tools, and will allow audience participation within small-group panels. Tutorials will give attendees hands-on experience with the latest tools and approaches.

We have invited an outstanding array of experts to share their experiences in successfully addressing the challenges of obsolescence, counterfeiting, standardization, parts management, data sharing, lead-free and many other related technical issues. Many opportunities will be available for interaction and peer-to-peer networking while attending an impressive Technical Exhibition designed to put you in contact with organizations that offer solutions for your DMSMS and standardization challenges.

I encourage you all to be a part of shaping the new directions and identifying the challenges facing the DMSMS and standardization communities by providing your thoughts and ideas.
